Adam and Lauren from The Floating Home recently joined us at Springwood Haven Marina to fit an electrics system in their van. Even though they’ve done most of the van build themselves, they felt uncomfortable fitting the electricity. It can be a fiddly job and there are many devices to place. That’s why they travelled to us for peace of mind.

What electrics were installed in their campervan?

For their campervan project, they opted for a Victron electrical system, which included:

Lauren built a backboard prior to the electrical system installation so it worked around the campervan’s interior. Once this was fixed in place, they constructed their bed over the top and used the space around the new system as storage. Organisation was key for The Floating Home' duo and Onboard Energy helped trail and weave the cables neatly through the van’s wall.

The 305W solar panel on the roof of the van harnesses the power from the sunny spots on their travels and stores the energy for use later. Thanks to the charge controller, the 200Ah lithium battery charges while they drive, and the solar panel shares the load when they adventure by foot. In this process, the battery management system will regulate charge levels to prevent overcharging and alert undercharging.

Even though they didn’t want any electrical involvement, Lauren and Adam got stuck in – nuts and bolts tightened, solar panel frames aligned and lots of roof mopping. Those pesky birds!

Why should your off-grid setup be professionally installed?

It’s worth weighing up the advantages of hiring experts. Onboard Energy’s technicians have the knowledge, skills and advice to assess your energy needs. Even things you might not have considered yet:

  • they’ll help you determine the most suitable products for your setup and design a tailored solution

  • they’ll use only the highest quality equipment and tools, and ensure components are correctly connected

  • they understand the latest industry standards and best practices

  • you’ll save all DIY frustration as they’re used to complex and time-consuming tasks

  • professional installers are aware of legal regulations and permits to ensure your off-grid electrical system avoids complications and penalties

Yes, the cost is a bit steeper compared to a DIY approach. But the long-term benefits are incomparable. You can get off on your travels sooner, be confident your system is safe and secure, and know that your system functions efficiently.
