Are you looking to add an inverter or inverter charger to your remote energy setup? Victron Energy’s solutions will align with your existing system. Find out how inverters work, how to pick the best one to suit your needs, and how Onboard Energy can help.

What does an inverter do?

The inverter in your power setup is designed to transform DC power, usually generated by solar panels, into AC, which powers your appliances in your mobile home. As everything you’re likely to use requires AC, your inverter performs a crucial role of transforming renewable energy into usable power.

There are three types of Victron Energy inverters: off-grid, hybrid (or grid-tied), and inverter/charger.

1. Off-grid

  • Draws power from batteries or solar panels, converting DC to usable AC
  • Operates independently with no connection to the utility grid
  • Can’t export power to the grid
  • Designed to function as a standalone power system

2. Hybrid/grid-tied

  • Includes built-in battery connections for energy storage
  • Can feed excess power back to the utility grid
  • Prioritises solar power when available, switching to grid power when needed
  • Manages solar output to gradually supplement your energy needs

3. Inverter/charger

  • Acts as a battery charger with built-in technology to manage various battery chemistries
  • Inverts power reliably and continuously
  • Provides a transfer switch which allows the generator to power your loads while charging your batteries at the same time

What are your power requirements?

Before you choose your Victron inverter, you need to know how much power you’ll be using. It’s best to calculate your peak load (how much you use at once) and how much over time (daily consumption).

Start by listing your appliances. Think about everything that will need power, like your fridge, kettle, lighting, TV, power tools, etc. Then write down the wattage for each item – this can be found on the label or in the user manual. If it’s listed in amps and volts, multiply them together to get the wattage.

E.g., volts (V) + amps (A) = watts (W)

If you expect to use some of these at the same time, you’ll need to use the appropriate inverter size to handle that combined load. For instance, if your kettle uses 2000W, your fridge 150W, and you have five 10W lights on, this totals 2200W at one time.

Therefore, you should choose an inverter which can handle at least 2200W, or ideally more to provide an added safety margin.

Choosing your inverter

Once you’ve worked out your power requirements, you can match them to the right Victron Energy inverter model. You should also consider battery compatibility, system voltage, and potential future expansion.

Phoenix

  • Best for small systems or users with modest needs
  • Ideal if you already have a separate battery or charging source
  • Compatible with other Victron products including Bluetooth Smart Dongle

MultiPlus

  • Combines an inverter and charger in one unit
  • Perfect for mobile and off-grid setups where you need to charge batteries from a generator
  • Offers seamless switching between power sources

Quattro

  • Similar to the MultiPlus but with two AC inputs
  • Ideal if your setup includes both a generator and grid power capabilities
  • Suited to larger or more complex systems

What to consider when installing your inverter

Victron Energy inverters need to be installed in dry, ventilated areas, ideally out of direct sunlight and away from moisture. To improve your inverter’s lifespan, ensure there’s enough clearance for cooling and airflow.

You should also consider the physical size of the inverter, as some mobile setups, like a campervan or narrowboat, have unique constraints. But the good news is that Onboard Energy stocks a Victron solution versatile enough for your needs.
